House History Program
Let us discover the history of your Manchester property. Order a house history from the Manchester-by-the-Sea Museum.
Histories will include:
-
important events in Manchester over the years
-
the unique history of the house and its occupants, footnoting all sources;
-
copies of primary sources such as wills, house inventories, newspaper clippings, photographs, diary entries, valuation records, deeds and more.
The histories will be written as narratives drawing on a variety of primary and secondary sources, all to be referenced in the text, with appendices. The histories will be written by two people:
Matthew Swindell, Associate Director, Manchester by the Sea Museum. Mr. Swindell will write about the relevant Manchester events and the social/societal history of the house and its occupants. He will be paid $300 per history; $150 in advance and $150 upon submission of the completed report to the Museum. Mr. Swindell will also serve as the intermediary between the Museum and the House History client.
John Clemson, Architectural Historian and Preservation Consultant. Mr. Clemson will write up the architectural history and related information on the house. He will offer a brief architectural home inspection and an opportunity to receive any information the homeowner may wish to provide. Mr. Clemson will have final editorial comment. He will be paid $200 per history; $100 in advance and $100 upon submission of the completed report to the Museum.
They will strive to produce histories within three months of them being commissioned.
All monies will be paid by the client by check directly to Mr. Clemson and to Mr. Swindell, mailed to the address of the Manchester-by-the-Sea Museum, 10 Union St., Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA 01944.
The narratives shall be work for hire and the Museum shall own the intellectual-property copyright on their content. The Museum will be provided with complete copies (text and appendices), as will those who commission them, with rights to reproduce same for personal use. Mr. Clemson and Mr. Swindell shall retain a nonexclusive license to use and reproduce the narrative content.
The Museum will arrange for House Markers for clients separately (est. cost $75).
